Canadian folksinger Gordon Lightfoot’s biggest hit was called Sundown (1974).
The song was inspired by his mistress and backup singer Cathy Smith.
She had been a groupie on the Canadian music scene who had a love child with a member of rock group The Band. It was unclear which musician was the father - Levon Helm, Rick Danko, or Richard Manuel.
She moved to Los Angeles and became a drug dealer to rock and roll celebrities, most notably Keith Richards and Ron Wood.
Smith was at the Chateau Marmont on the night comic actor John Belushi died.
She later confessed to the National Enquirer that she had injected Belushi with the drugs that killed him.
Smith spent 15 months in prison and then faded into obscurity.
She died August 16, 2020 at age 73. Smith outlived Belushi, Helm, Danko, and Manuel.
As of this writing, Gordon Lightfoot is still alive.
